Mayor is part of a growing movement of Colombian musicians based in New York, who are mixing traditional Colombian music with other sounds under the umbrella dubbed Nueva Colombiana. Celebrating their 10th anniversary, Folklore Urbano's propulsive stew of Colombian and Afro-Cuban sounds have been gaining audiences. Born in Cali, Colombia and educated at the University of North Texas - where he met his wife and bandmate, flautist Anna Povich - Mayor is the founder and organizer of the recent Ecuentro festival of Colombian music in New York City. "It's real exciting," said Mayor, a composer, arranger, and pianist. "It's a dream to be able to present (this music)." Asked about future plans, Mayor said he looks forward to "bringing people from Colombia (and) presenting a show in Colombia." Mayor has composed for plays and musicals and he teaches Latin jazz and jazz theory at New York's Harbor Conservatory. He has composed and arranged for salsa heavyweight Orquesta Broadway and Arturo O'Farrill's Afro-Latin Orchestra.  Read more here. Semana International delivers news about Colombia in English.
